Best Time to Trek in Nepal: A Season-by-Season Guide
Spring colour, autumn clarity, winter quiet or monsoon green — here's how Nepal's four seasons shape your trek.
Nepal can be trekked all year, but the experience changes enormously with the seasons. Picking the right window is the easiest way to improve your trip — better views, more comfortable temperatures and safer trail conditions. Here is what to expect through the year.
Autumn (late September to November) — peak season
Autumn is widely considered the best time to trek in Nepal. The monsoon has washed the air clean, so mountain views are at their sharpest, days are dry and stable, and temperatures are pleasant at most elevations. It is also the busiest season, so book guides and lodges early for popular routes like Everest and Annapurna.
Spring (March to May) — warm and colourful
Spring is the second prime season. The hillsides erupt with rhododendron and wildflowers, wildlife is active, and longer daylight makes for relaxed days. Higher passes are clear of winter snow by April. There can be some afternoon haze later in spring, but mornings are usually crisp and clear.
Winter (December to February) — quiet and crisp
Winter brings cold nights at altitude and the chance of snow on high passes, but also the quietest trails and beautifully clear, stable days. Lower and mid-elevation treks such as Poon Hill, Langtang and the Annapurna foothills are excellent in winter with the right gear. High passes like Thorong La may close after heavy snow.
Monsoon (June to August) — green but wet
The summer monsoon brings rain, cloud, slippery trails and leeches to most of Nepal. It is not the time for the big classic treks. However, the rain-shadow regions north of the main range — Upper Mustang and Dolpo — stay relatively dry and are at their best, making summer the ideal time to visit those Tibetan-influenced valleys.
- Want the clearest views? Go in autumn (Oct–Nov)
- Love flowers and warmth? Choose spring (Mar–Apr)
- Prefer solitude and don't mind cold? Try winter on lower treks
- Travelling in summer? Head to Upper Mustang in the rain shadow
