Annapurna Base Camp vs Annapurna Circuit: Which Trek Should You Choose?

Two of Nepal's greatest treks, side by side — so you can choose the Annapurna route that fits your time, fitness and goals.

  • So which should you pick?

The Annapurna region offers two world-class treks that travellers often confuse: the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek and the Annapurna Circuit. Both are spectacular, both start near Pokhara, and both are achievable for fit beginners with a good guide — but they are quite different experiences. Here is how to choose.

Annapurna Base Camp at a glance

ABC takes you straight into the heart of the mountains, finishing in a natural amphitheatre at 4,130 m ringed by ten peaks over 7,000 m. It is shorter — usually 7 to 12 days — with lush rhododendron forest, terraced hills and the famous Poon Hill sunrise often added on. It is the better choice if you are short on time but still want that surrounded-by-giants feeling.

The Annapurna Circuit at a glance

The Circuit is a longer journey — classically 12 to 16 days — that loops around the entire Annapurna massif and crosses the high Thorong La pass at 5,416 m. The reward is astonishing variety: you walk from subtropical valleys through alpine desert that feels like Tibet, passing the sacred temple of Muktinath. It suits trekkers who want a bigger, more varied expedition and a true high-pass challenge.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Length: ABC 7–12 days · Circuit 12–16 days
  • Max altitude: ABC 4,130 m · Circuit 5,416 m (Thorong La)
  • Scenery: ABC = forests + glacial sanctuary · Circuit = huge landscape variety
  • Difficulty: ABC moderate · Circuit moderate–hard (high pass)
  • Best for: ABC = limited time, classic views · Circuit = epic variety, pass-crossing

So which should you pick?

Choose Annapurna Base Camp if you have around a week, want dramatic close-up peaks, and prefer a steadier altitude profile. Choose the Annapurna Circuit if you have two weeks or more, you are reasonably fit, and you want the sense of a grand traverse across changing worlds. Either way, our local guides handle permits, lodges and logistics so you can focus on the walking.
