Some Facts on Honey Hunting Remote Nepal

According to much scientific research, what we are doing is one of the oldest activities continued by humans for survival. According to the study of many scientists and researches roc, it has been found that honey has been hunted in Nepal since 1300 BC.

There are still many people around the world whose primary source of income comes from wild honey. For example, in Nepal, many people from western regions collect honey from the world’s largest bees, called Apis. 

The work of honey hunting is labor-intensive but high earning. These bees live on the high cliffs of the foothills. Although the honey hunters risk their lives for wild honey, their natural benefits for humans, medicines, and other industries have supported a large number of people around the world.

How is Honey Hunted in Nepal?

Honey hunting is difficult. Firstly, the honey hunters drive away the bees by lighting a fire under hives. After that, they build ladders and baskets of ropes. Then, finally, the villagers organize the honey harvesting.

Honey hunting takes place twice a year. It is done preferably when hunters come together and migrate into the Himalayas. They dare to take on this huge task with mortal danger.

It takes at least two to three hours to harvest one colony. However, It changes due to the location of the hive and size. The villagers also have many harvesting rituals of harvesting the wild honey and worship and respecting them for providing sufficient income. The ritual changes according to the communities who harvest the honey. 

The ritual begins with a prayer and the sacrifice of flowers, fruit, and rice. Then a fire is lit at the base of the cliff to smoke the bees from their honeycombs.

Above, a honey hunter descends the cliff from the ropes attached to the ladder. His friends will fasten the rope and ladder and lift the spring tools and try to collect honey as high as possible.

General ITINERARY for Honey Hunting In Nepal

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu

Max Altitude: 1,400 m

You will be arriving in Kathmandu from Tribhuvan International Airport. Our representative will meet you with a company placard and send you to a 3-star Hotel in Kathmandu. Meet the representative of Himalayan Trekkers and get transferred to the designated hotel.

In the evening, you can enjoy dinner in the Thamel area. 

Day 2: Kathmandu Tour & Tour Preparation (5-6 hrs tour)

Max Altitude: 1,400 m

After a warm breakfast at the hotel, we will visit world-famous UNESCO sites in Kathmandu Valley. We can explore some of the World heritage sites in Kathmandu valley, such as Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Changunarayan Temple, etc. 

Later, we can enjoy some delicious afternoon tea and snacks. After that, we can prepare for our main trip.

Day 3: Drive to Besi Sahar (6 hrs drive)

Max Altitude: 760 m

After breakfast, we will drive along the Prithivi Highway until we reach Dumre. Then, we will take a rough road through the Marshyangdi River. After that, we will pass through the low-lying villages and rice fields for around 6 hours. 

Today, we will be staying overnight at Besi Sahar. Besi Sahar is a small market area on the bank of the Marshyangdi River. It is also the headquarters of Lamjung District.

Day 4: Trek to Ghalegaun (7 hrs Trek)

After breakfast, we will be heading towards Ghalegaun. We can either trek or drive to Ghale Gaun. Although, trekking is more exciting than driving.

We will pass through many settlements of various Nepali local communities through the villages of Sirung village, Thulo village, etc. We can also see the beautiful views of many mountains in the Annapurna and Manaslu regions. Upon reaching the village, you will have a grand welcome ceremony from the local villagers.

Day 5: Trek to Bhujung via Ghanapokhara ( 3 hrs trek)

Max Altitude: 2,100 m

After breakfast, we will visit Ghale Gaun. Soon after, we will explore the largest Gurung settlement in Annapurna Conservation Area, Bhujung. Finally, we will stop by Ghanapokhara. Ghanapokhara has a beautiful view of the Annapurna and Manaslu Ranges. 

Then we will take a few hours of hiking until we reach Bhujung. 

After reaching Bhujung, we will visit the Bhujung Museum and Hydro Power Sites. Then, we will go back to our homestay. 

Day 6: Trek to ThakuBhir (Honey Hunting Site) (3-4 hrs trek)

Max Altitude: + 2,100 m

After breakfast, we continued to ascend to ThakuBhir, leaving Bhujung. After that, we will come in close contact with their culture and tradition. We will be staying here overnight.

Day 7: Observe Honey Hunting Ceremony (6-7 hrs trek)

Today is the day we will complete the main goal of the trip. After the honey hunting ritual ceremony, we will enjoy our taste of the labor: the freshly harvested honey while enjoying the traditional methods of harvesting honey from the high cliffs. 

Day 8: Trek back to Bhujung (3-4 hrs trek)

Max Altitude: 1,600 m

We trek back to Bhujung village today. We will be returning through the same route that we traveled before.

Day 9: Trek Back to Besisahar (6-7 hrs trek)

Max Altitude: 760 m

Following the back steps, we will return to Besisahar and spend the night. 

Day 10: Drive back to Kathmandu ( 6 hrs drive)

Max Altitude: 1,400 m

After breakfast, we will be packing up to return to Kathmandu. Bidding farewell to Besisahar, after at least 6 hours of driving, we will drive back to the capital, Kathmandu. You can rest or roam around the streets and go shopping upon arrival. 

Day 11: Final Departure (30 min private drive)

Max Altitude: 1,400 m

Today, we may return home from Kathmandu or extend the trip and head for another trip within or outside Nepal. We will love to hear from you again.
