No tents required. Here's how Nepal's classic lodge-to-lodge trekking really works.

Most treks in Nepal are 'teahouse treks', which means you walk from village to village and sleep in family-run lodges rather than camping. It is one of the things that makes trekking in Nepal so accessible and so charming. Here is what to expect.

Accommodation

Teahouses are simple but comfortable. Rooms are usually twin-share with basic beds and blankets; you bring your own sleeping bag for warmth higher up. Lower-elevation lodges can be surprisingly cosy, while the highest camps are more spartan. Toilets are often shared, and hot showers may cost a little extra at altitude.

Food

You'll eat well. The staple is dal bhat — rice, lentil soup, vegetables and pickle — which is wholesome, filling and usually refillable. Menus also offer noodles, momos, soups, pancakes and more. Eating local dishes is tastier, cheaper and fresher than imported items the higher you go.

Facilities and etiquette

  • Charging and Wi-Fi are often available for a small fee at altitude
  • Carry cash — cards are rarely accepted on the trail
  • Bring a reusable bottle and purify water rather than buying plastic
  • Be patient and friendly; lodges are family homes and businesses

Why we love it

Teahouse trekking means warm meals, real beds and genuine encounters with mountain communities — no heavy camping gear required. It is comfortable enough for beginners and authentic enough for veterans.

Curious what the lodges are like on your chosen route? Just ask us — we know them personally.
